Listeners were dropped into the middle of a bleak crime caper this past week when HipHopDX.com premiered Stevie Stone’s “Dollar General” featuring Shady Records’ Yelawolf from Rollin’ Stone.

Out for the register, the track featured Stevie Stone slipping into the role of a criminal and weaving a story of desperation and hostility. Inspired by the 2006 film Street Thief, Stevie Stone jumped at the opportunity of giving listeners a new side of his creativity and put together a true outlaw tale.

When Stevie Stone joined us on the Strange Music Podcast, he shared some insight into the making of “Dollar General” and discussed the inspiration he received from Street Thief.

You have a collaboration with Yelawolf on this new album. How did that come about?

I gotta give props to Richie Abbott, that’s the publicist. That all goes out to him, big shout out to Richie. Yes, me and Yelawolf have a record on the album called “Dollar General”. Actually, I was inspired by – I was able to do something that I’ve never done before as far as music wise, so I let the music take me on this. It’s not necessarily a track that I would have automatically done on the regular, but it was different and that’s what I loved about it. I was able to do something totally different. I was able to go into a whole ‘nother character. I was actually inspired by this documentary called Street Thief and this dude named Kaspar Karr. It’s a documentary.

I got the beat from WillPower, if people don’t know WillPower, he’s one of Yelawolf’s partners and producers. So they sent me the beat with Yelawolf on the hook and I didn’t know what to do with it at first, but after I saw this documentary called Street Thief – and I encourage everybody to go watch this, it’s a crazy ass documentary. It’s actually on NetFlix, dude’s name is Kaspar Karr and I actually put myself into Kaspar Karr’s shoes on this record. I was able to go into some different shoes and tell a story, story-tell on it. It was something different than I ever did. I hope the people enjoy it, I definitely enjoyed it.
